RUNSTEM Educators enjoy teaching students coding games and worlds in the virtual environment and say it’s efficient and engaging way of learning.
RUNSTEM first tried Minecraft more than a year ago and continue using it. Minecraft: Education Edition is a special version of the game developed specifically for educational use. This version adds features and controls for classrooms, specialty blocks and communication tools which is great to learn coding for kids. It's still staying a game which students have been playing for years but with extra educational features. This learning approach promotes creativity, collaboration, STEM and problem-solving skills.
Darya Sachenka, Co-Founder and STEM+A Educator of RUNSTEM, is talking about how Minecraft virtual world helping students to learn STEM and coding in particular: ‘Learning can be more effective when you don’t think that you are learning, you just think that you are enjoying the game. In-game, the coding is represented by an actual helper robot that players are able to code commands into. Furthermore, it’s super fun. In this way, children keen to learn programming and at the same time they acquire other important 21st century skills. When students are working on a game project they solve problems together. And as you know nowadays most of our jobs involve interacting with others that are not even in the same line of profession. The need for effective teamwork is critical for any business. Moreover, Minecraft gives students a unique tool for self-expression – coding in virtual world. Every day I can see children leaving classes smiling, inspired by successfully achieving lesson goals and ready to share new knowledge with the world around them. That is the most significant result for RUNSTEM and for me personally.’
